One should be reminded of the fact that what you have are standard console equipment at the time (console, controller, memory card, etc.) and yet MGS was able to make the most out of them.

Heck, they even included the game's packaging as part of the gameplay.

Fun, yet random fact: On my third run of this game, my PS3 controller didn't vibrate, and I swear I had the vibration on.

Even back in 1998? I only really found out about the Playstation 'round 99/00

Introduced in 1998.
Shortly after that many games started having Dual Shock-compatibility (such as the first Parasite Eve, Final Fantasy VIII & especially Ape Escape).

After that, Dual Shock became the standard controller for the PS, where the regular controllers are discontinued.
